The analytical company Marketing Logic, based on open data from Rosstat, its own data showcase and geoinformation technologies, has compiled a rating of Russian millionaire cities based on the geographical accessibility of the most popular city services for residents.
Within the administrative boundaries of each of the 16 million-plus cities, analysts calculated the proportion of residents living within 500 and 1000 meters of the most popular city services. The list is topped by Moscow and St. Petersburg with average walking distance to basic services and infrastructure for more than 87% of residents, and Volgograd closes with almost 20% of residents living further than 500 and 1000 meters from various types of city services.
“In this study, we divided services into two groups based on how far we estimated residents would be willing to walk to get to them. Plus, we took into account objective factors: it is unrealistic that schools can be located today so that for the majority of residents they are no more than 500 meters away. Likewise for parks, clinics, kindergartens. For this group, we took a more common and realistic figure - one kilometer, which corresponds to approximately 12-15 minutes of walking. We calculated the minimum walking distance of 500 m for grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, hairdressers and beauty salons, post offices, as well as sports infrastructure, because it includes sports grounds next to the house. After basic calculations, we derived the average indicator by which we ranked the cities. In general, we can note that the availability coefficients are quite high, plus we see positive dynamics,” says Dmitry Galkin, managing partner and CEO of Marketing Logic, about the calculation methodology.
All calculations were carried out in the Atlas geographic information system: the platform allocated all accessibility zones within a radius of 500 and 1000 meters from each research object into separate polygons, after which analysts calculated the proportion of residents living in these accessibility zones. Subsequently, the cities are ranked by average value from maximum to minimum.
